SO I was reading neuropharmacology papers on Nature.com and came across an article entitled Switching Into A Disassociated State, written by Jake Rogers. I started reading the first paragraph:

“The cellular and circuit mechanisms that produce dissociated states — in which an individual’s internal experiences disconnect from the environment — are unclear. Now, Cichon et al. show that, in mice, ketamine-induced dissociated states are triggered by populations of active or silent cortical pyramidal neurons switching their activity state”

At about the end of the paragraph I spilled my coffee on my desk and all over my keyboard. I didn’t even get to realize that the full article was protected by a subscription wall until 10 minutes after clean-up.
Hello true believers. I recently got my hands on a printed version of Doc Pop's Far Away. I was fortunate enough to help Doc with the book, a challenging and rewarding experience. The comic should be available to buy in digital and print versions. You could also check out DocPop's website for more details on this book. Cheers!
Or Donut Appreciation Day. Please help the donuts. So many donuts die each year in the mouths of plebs. Those helpless, delicious donuts live such a short life. Most of them die in the dark abyss of caffeinated beverages. Some of them get covered in butter and thrown inside an oven. Others get animal meats stuffed inside their sugary maws. Will you help free the donuts? Donate today. Every dollar saves a donut.

I will admit to eating many hundreds of donuts in my lifetime. To them I am a living monster. Perhaps if I help save their donut race my life might be spared when the donutgeddon brings about their lord and savior, King Cruller.
In my free time I've been working on a few freelance gigs. Here's one of two videos that I worked on for a friend's project. It was inspired by a Twilight Zone Episode. I created it in After Effects using just keyframes and cut out puppet parts for the jaw and the hands. I'll try to post the other one later.
Helicopter Rescue has just released a new album called Los Angeles. It comes from a place of hope and many possibilities. Helicopter Rescue has been thinking about starting a subscription as a way to release music that has not been otherwise released to the general public. If you're interested, you could contact them here. Enjoy!

Hello,
I made a visit to Los Angeles over the weekend to check out the Robert William's Slang Aesthetic Exhibition at the LA Municipal Art Gallery. I also got the chance to check out The La Luz De Jesus Gallery. I also go the chance to meet up with some friends, eat some tacos, and see an early showing of Ex Machina.

Here's a few photos:
So, I'm getting in the habit of drawing a thing every day. I usually pull ideas from Sketch Dailies, a daily drawing Twitter feed. But today I decided to use Phil McAndrew's Big List Of Stuff To Draw.

My work tends to differ from at least those artists who use pen tablets primarily. My work is not as clean and crisp as most. I like drawing abnormal, dirty, sweaty people who have some character to them. I do use a tablet to clean up small things, but I always try to start out with pencil and ink before adding color and touch ups.

I've been thinking about my artistic influences and I should sit down and list them out. My influences today seems to be a little Robert Crumb, a pinch of Peter Bagge, a sprinkle of Basil Wolverton. It's too bad none of them were any good at doing color. I have tons more influences that are contemporary to the 21st century.

I really liked the color combos in that Gravity Falls cartoon series. Also the animation. I mention that show because alot of my influences are from video games, animations, people on the street. I try not to copy other illustrator's work. But sometimes their influence just slips in there.

Okay, that's it for now.

A few months ago I had creators block. I couldn't draw anything. While I was spending a few weeks in Idaho visiting relatives, I made this monster drawing of the Instagram logo. I thought it was a neat idea. So I started making one or two a day. The second one I made was of Twitter. So, of course, the third monster had to be Facebook.

Igorlabs just released Squirrel Warz, a real time strategy game with squirrels. I provided art. Find out more about the game by going HERE!

Here's an an animated GIF I created in Photoshop. It's too big at 4.4mbs. I don't care. Gonna put it up on the internet. Some day I will learn how to put this in a video and add sound. I spent way too much time on making this, but I had to make it because I've been going through a stupid human phase of creative slump where I wasn't able to do much of anything. So this animation represents my struggle to do something, anything, and just get the damn thing done. Finished. Shipped.

Now I can move on and make another thing.
Enjoy.Mike Haleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08779303080796188862noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8143386462497982377.post-50904411976426887542014-03-27T17:10:00.001-07:002014-03-27T17:10:37.718-07:00A new comic

I wanted to do something for GIF-A-WEEK, so I animated a burger bird. Here's a rare specimen, full of juicy vim and vinegar. I bet you can't catch him.

Woah! I'm back! Hello everybody!
2012 has been an exciting year with many things happening. But, you wouldn't know that reading Mike Makes Art because I haven't written a post on Mike Makes Art for a whole year. I stopped blogging the moment after I started working for a small video game company located in San Francisco called Sifteo, Inc. They make an awesome cube based gaming platform.

I did lose track of blogging, but I met and worked with a team of smart, talented people whose brains were full of great ideas. So, I wanted to get back into the habit of posting regularly. To start, I could mention the latest game I helped work on. We just launched TMNT Ninja Slide. It has turtles, puzzles, mousers, dark alleyways, mystery, and lots of pizza eating action. Check out TMNT Ninja Slide and other games right here!

To the art. This will continue to be mostly an art blog, so I thought I would share some concept art that was created a bit before production rolled around. Fair warning: I like animated GIFs, so there's going to be lots of GIF action up in this.

Don't worry. This is not the end of the game, but it pretty much sums up the spirit of the game, at least when I was making concepts. Strangely, these exact scenes happened right after we finished production on the game. It was like I was seeing into the future.

Michelangelo had one of my favorite attacks, mainly because his motion defined the most amount of space the turtle sprites would be able to inhabit in the game, which is about 45x45 pixels. I wanted to do a little test with some mousers and background tiles, so I whipped this up to test the whole attack sequence:

Even though I like the little jump he does, we had some good reasons why shrinking the assets a bit would fix some issues cropping up. It also made sense to cut down on the number of frames so the animation would be quicker and feel more instant when a player pressed the cube to attack.

Ultimately, these changes made it much more satisfying when attacking with Michelangelo.

There's a bunch more material I could post in the future about TMNT Ninja Slide, other games I've been working on throughout the year, and some new comics material I made for 24 Hour Comic Jam this year. For now, starting up this blogging thing was a good enough milestone to hit. I just wanted to say thanks for reading. I hope you dig it.

I just finished a Doomsday themed painting for a show at The Secret Alley in San Francisco. It looks like this:

If you look really close, it looks like this:

There's a good chance that you have run into the mythical keyboard cat somewhere in your internet travels, and you'll hopefully appreciate the sentiment that I propose here. If Doomsday were to go down, who better to play us off than Dr. Doom? It will probably be his fault anyways.

To Win!On September 30th I participated in Chicken John's book release party and street festival at 111 Minna Street Gallery for The Book Of The Is: Fail... To Win! The show's proceeds were to help save Chicken john's Warehouse Space on Army St. It was a fun and rewarding way to help out. Apparently the show was a success and exceeded his expectations.

I always wanted to get my art in the 111 Minna Street Gallery, but I never thought it would be a book sleeve covered in Boner Dollars.

What are boner dollars, you ask? Well, they look like this:

I used these art supplies:

To make this book sleeve:

For this art show:

The Free Dictionary defines boner as a blunder, or an error. Their website has a robotic voice button that pronounces the word "boner" for your enjoyment and further education.

This project was almost perfect for a show with a theme of failing to win. I failed a few times while working on the piece. But I won because I finally got a piece in the 111 Minna Street Gallery. I hope it's not the last time.

Mike Haleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08779303080796188862noreply@blogger.com1
